AdNews on the iPad

AdNews, Australia's leading publication serving the advertising, marketing and media industries, has released its first issue on the iPad using WoodWing’s Enterprise Content Publishing Platform and The Saints PDF to Tablet conversion system.

Founded in 1928, AdNews is published fortnightly and its iPad launch further compliments the brand's website, mobile skin and daily email newsletter.

Yaffa Publishing already has a strong bond with WoodWing and is currently producing over thirty-five titles with a sophisticated WoodWing workflow. After viewing numerous solutions from different vendors, Yaffa Publishing decided to extend the functionality of their existing system by incorporating WoodWing’s Digital Magazine Tools.

Yaffa Publishing Production Director Matthew Gunn said the move to iPad had long been deliberated and they were just waiting for some more impact in the market from the launch of iPad 2 before taking the plunge.

"We always intended to pursue the iPad option, but like most publishers, we wanted to wait and see what the market was like before dipping our toe into the water," he said.

"But now that we have launched AdNews, I can see it as the catalyst for further launches," he added, referring to the 35-plus publications within the Yaffa stable.

After weighing up the options of the fully interactive application as compared to a PDF replica version, the Yaffa management team decided the replica best represented the AdNews brand, whilst allowing the reader to enjoy interaction through bonus content.

"AdNews is a news based title and, as has been highlighted in recent Apps launched by leading Australian Newspapers, the replica version is the preferred option," added Gunn. “However, premium content will soon be made available to iPad users via AdNewsTV.”

Industry leading solutions provider, Creative Folks Pty Ltd, assisted with the project.

“This was not simply about creating a readable PDF for the iPad,” said Andrew Lomas, Project Sales Director for Creative Folks. “Yaffa wanted to add interactivity not generally available in standard replicas and offer the iPad version free to their existing print subscriber base. This meant a little bit of work was required in the back end, but the result speaks for itself.”

AdNews is one of the oldest news titles of its kind in Australia,” added Matthew Green, Managing Director of Creative Folks. “Helping the team at Yaffa to bring such a prestigious publication to the iPad has been a privilege.”

So what’s next for Yaffa Publishing’s vast array of specialist consumer and B2B titles?

“We are very interested in WoodWing’s integration with Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite,” said Matthew Gunn. “It seems to be an ideal solution to bring more of our titles to market.”
